Many of you are concerned regarding the status of Great Valley Nature. We are too. While there are not many details to share at this time, here is what we know:
At this time, Great Valley Nature Center is not offering summer camps for 2018 and is not offering school, group, or adult programs during the spring 2018 season. Also note that GVNC is not accepting donations. The Nature Center’s Birds of Prey have been placed with licensed wildlife sanctuaries including Audubon and Wildlands Conservancy.
A few of organizations are working towards a solution for the GVNC property and programs. As we find out details we promise to pass them along to you. Updates will be posted on the GV Nature Conservancy website and sent out via email to those who have registered. Register for emails on our NEWS page.
We know this is difficult for those who have come to rely on the Nature Center’s programs; parents and children, schools, community groups, and other non-profits. We love the Nature Center too, and we are dedicated to bringing environmental education back to Charlestown.
Please continue to watch this website for developments and please register for our emails to receive updates. We hope to have more information in the months ahead.
Great Valley Nature Conservancy
Meeting notices are out - the meeting has been posted on a number of local webpages. Hopefully we have great interest and support for the Nature Center at the meeting. We hope you all can attend the Monday, July 10th meeting of the Charlestown Board of Supervisors, as they discuss the fate of the Great Valley Nature Center.
The current status of the Nature Center is a complicated situation. However, these steps being taken by the Township; looking into purchasing the Center property, and seeing if the YMCA would be interested in holding environmental education programs and/or camps there, are promising. They are a start.
As a group, our GV Nature Conservancy seeks to save the Nature Center and safeguard environmental education and outdoor experiences held there. A purchase of the land and buildings by the Township would be a plus for any future programs. And, programs run by the YMCA would also help to quickly get back what we are missing - opportunities for our children.
The best part out of all of this is that both of these entities can come to the table, if they are interested in the opportunity, and know that they have support from our group to work towards a solution. We want an environmental education center for our community that everyone can use and enjoy.
We hope you can attend Monday's meeting. The Supervisors have much to discuss. This is not an easy fix. There will be much work ahead. Let's hope that we can all find a way forward together as a community.
See you all on Monday!

Urgent Update on Great Valley Nature Center
We hope you all enjoyed a celebratory 4th of July! It has been a while since we contacted you last, but we finally have an update on actions involving the Nature Center.
Recently, Charlestown Township was brought into the discussion regarding the future of the Great Valley Nature Center. Around the same time representatives from UMLY (Upper Main Line YMCA) toured the Nature Center to determine whether or not they could use the site for future programs and/or camps.
Both of these possibilities and the issues surrounding them will be discussed this coming Monday evening, July 10th, as part of the monthly Charlestown Township Board of Supervisors meeting. The meeting will be held at Great Valley Middle School, in room 154, beginning at 7:00pm.
We encourage all of you to attend the meeting to hear what is being discussed regarding the Nature Center's future, and to share your views and opinions. You can view the Board of Supervisors agenda for Monday night’s meeting via the links below.
We hope to see you at the meeting!

Thanks so much for visiting the new virtual meeting place for the Great Valley Nature Conservancy. We are a group that is interested in the future of environmntal education programming in Charlestown Township and throughout Chester County, PA.
We first started coming together when it was apparent that the comprehensive environmental education programming offered by the Great Valley Nature Center was in jeopardy. It was at a meeting this March that we were all notified that the Board had decided to dissolve the entity that is the Great Valley Nature Center. Faced with the dissolution of this 43-year-old, beloved non-profit organization, our group banded together, talked through possibilities to save the programs, formed committees, and proceeded with ideas that might save environmental education programming in Charlestown Township.
The members of our group all come from different areas of connection with the Nature Center. We are summer camp parents, and former summer campers! We are neighbors. We are parents of school children who came to GVNC for field trips in science and history. We are faithful participants in GVNC's adult adventure programs. We are former staff and former volunteers. We hail from many zip codes, but we come together here. We are a group of people who value our connections to the natural world around us, and want that for our children, and for your children.
We are just a few months into figuring out what our group is and how it can be of help. We hope you will join us. Lend us your voice, your experience, your passion and help us to organize a future for environmental education for all.
Please watch this space, and sign up for our updates. We hope to have a date soon for another meeting with the Board of the Great Valley Nature Center. We are awaiting an update on the dissolution of the Center.
